January 2006 Springhill Cohousing, Stroud, shortlisted for ODPM award

Springhill Cohousing, Stroud, believed to be the first newbuild cohousing scheme successfully completed in the United Kingdom, has been recognised by the Deputy Prime Minister's Award for making an "outstanding contribution" to Sustainable Communities.

Cohousing is essentially a housing community where the cars are parked on the periphery, freeing pedestrian space for community members of all ages, where each household has a self-contained house and people have the opportunity to eat together and meet regularly in a large communal house. The original members have a say in the design of the community and decision making is by consensus, where possible.

Designed by Architype, Springhill Cohousing comprises 34 residential units, ranging from one bedroomed flats to five bedrooomed houses, together with a three-storey 'common house'. The units are well-insulated, timber-framed, low polluting and energy saving in design, many of them having roof-top photo-voltaic panels generating electricity. A sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) has been incorporated in the scheme, featuring rilles, streams, ponds, stilling basins, and a waterfall.

Complete Construction Management Limted ( CCM ) provided quantity surveying services on the £4.5 million project.
